Changes to terms and conditions and new EPR service on Kaufland.fr - what does this mean for retailers?

The e-commerce market is changing at a rapid pace and, with it, the requirements for sellers operating in foreign markets are increasing. One area that is particularly gaining in importance is compliance with environmental regulations such as EPR - Extended Producer Responsibility. This is a system that makes sellers responsible for the entire life cycle of a product, from its introduction to the market through to its disposal.

In France, these provisions are very restrictive and require retailers to have unique identification numbers (IDUs) for each category of product covered by the EPR. It is in response to these requirements that Kaufland has introduced the service „EPR Management by Kaufland”, which in practice can take much of the paperwork off the shoulders of vendors.

Your support in obtaining IDU numbers

„EPR Management by Kaufland” is a tool that automatically takes over the responsibility of obtaining and assigning IDU numbers for the product categories indicated. If the retailer does not enter them himself, the system does this for him by assigning the relevant numbers in the Retailer Portal. The process works fully automatically and is already activated at the onboarding stage on Kaufland.fr. Importantly, it can be opted out at any time - simply deactivate the service in the shop settings.

With this solution, the vendor receives fast and efficient support in completing the formalities, without having to register in each category separately. Mandatory information, such as environmental fees or take-back conditions, is automatically made available in the offers. The system also takes care of detailed reporting - monthly statements of ecological contributions and a sales register are available in the Portal. The vendor does not have to report data to the PRO organisation himself either, as everything is done automatically, including the calculation and payment of contributions according to official rates.

Full coverage and transparent costs

The service covers six EPR product categories, including electrical and electronic equipment, furniture, sporting goods, DIY, gardening and toys. In addition, two special categories are included: packaging for consumer products and batteries and accumulators. The service charge is EUR 1.90 per month for each category requiring an IDU, plus statutory environmental contributions calculated according to the category and number of products sold. Everything is billed without commission, in full, based on the PRO organisation's official rates.

To illustrate - a retailer who operates in six product categories and additionally sells products containing batteries and packaging will pay a total of EUR 15.20 per month service charge plus VAT. To this will be added environmental premiums, calculated according to actual sales.

What the service won't do for you

It is worth remembering that „EPR Management by Kaufland” does not cover all obligations. The retailer is still responsible for including the mandatory data on the invoice, adhering to the guidelines for the labelling of shipping packages and providing the repairability and shelf life indices of the products. Failure to provide this information may result in offers being hidden on the site, so these elements need to be kept under control.

Why use the assistance?

The new regulations can seem intricate and time-consuming to implement. That's why more and more vendors are choosing to entrust these responsibilities to specialists. We can help you with the entire process - from analysing what IDU numbers you need, to obtaining and assigning them, to monitoring fees and reporting to the PRO organisation. This will not only help you comply with legal requirements, but also give you peace of mind and time to develop your sales.

The changes to the Kaufland Global Marketplace terms and conditions and the new „EPR Management by Kaufland” service are not just a formality - they signal that e-commerce is becoming increasingly focused on environmental responsibility. If you use this well, you can gain a competitive advantage, and we will be happy to assist you in this process so that you can operate without fear of legal compliance.
