Why won’t advertising make up for a poor product?
When sales drop, many marketplace sellers turn to advertising for a solution. They launch Allegro Ads, Amazon Ads or eMAG Ads campaigns, or invest in promoting their products on social media, hoping for a rapid improvement in results.
Unfortunately, it very often turns out that increasing the advertising budget does not deliver the expected results. The reason is simple – advertising may increase the visibility of an offer, but it will not fix its underlying problems.
Advertising attracts traffic, but it doesn’t guarantee sales
The purpose of an advert is to direct a potential customer to the offer. However, this is only the first stage of the purchasing process.
If, upon visiting a product page, a customer sees unattractive photos, an incomplete description, missing key specifications or a price higher than the competition’s, they will most likely leave the page without making a purchase.
In this situation, the advert is working as it should – it’s generating traffic. The problem lies elsewhere.

The most common mistakes that limit the effectiveness of adverts
- Poor-quality product photos
The main image is often the first thing that determines whether someone clicks on an advert. Blurry photos, a lack of additional images, or graphics that fail to highlight the product’s key features significantly reduce the effectiveness of a campaign.
- Unreadable title
The title should include the most important keywords and clearly convey what the offer is about. Titles that are too general hinder both search engine optimisation and conversion.
- No distinguishing features
Customers need to know why they should choose your offer in particular. If your product page looks exactly the same as a dozen or so of your competitors’ listings, the advert alone won’t be enough to persuade them to buy.
- Uncompetitive price
Even the best-prepared campaign cannot change the fact that customers often compare prices across several retailers at the same time. It is worth regularly monitoring the market and analysing your pricing position.
- A small number of reviews
Reviews have become one of the most important factors influencing purchasing decisions. Customers are much more likely to choose an offer that has several dozen or several hundred positive reviews.
- Advertising works best when there’s a ready-made offer
The best results are achieved by salespeople who treat advertising as a tool for scaling up sales, rather than a way of solving problems with their product range.
Before increasing the budget, it is worth considering:
Only once these elements have been sorted out can an advert realise its full potential.

How can you tell if the problem lies with the product itself rather than the advert?
One of the simplest metrics is the conversion rate.
If an advert generates a large number of visits but sales remain low, this means that users are interested in the product, but something is stopping them from buying it.
In such a situation, increasing the budget usually only leads to higher costs.
First the foundations, then the advertising
Modern e-commerce requires a comprehensive approach. Success does not depend solely on the size of the advertising budget, but on the quality of the entire sales process.
A well-prepared listing, attractive photos, the right price, positive reviews and efficient customer service form the foundation on which advertising can effectively drive sales growth.
Advertising won’t save a poor offer. It can only show it to a larger audience. That’s why, before you increase your campaign budget, it’s worth making sure that the offer itself is ready for more traffic and higher sales.
